Who we are

"Do you ever wonder why we're here." Ashura asked, "Why we exist?"

Ashura stood on a viewing platform overlooking the valley. He leaned on the white railing. Nearby stood Shadow, his brother.

"No, I can't. You shouldn't either," Shadow replied.

"Oh," Ashua said, tilting his head quizzically, "And why is that?"

Shadow sighed, then leaned on the railing himself, his form casting a long shadow in the moonlight. "Unlike everyone else in this world, you and I know our purpose. As you know you and I are both created from the Ultimate Lifeform projects."

Shadow paused, hesitating as he worked out what he needed to say, "What you haven't been told is why we were created. The military wanted to create a supreme fighting creature, something that would allow them to win any contest."

"So then, why are we... free?" Ashura asked, he looked down at his hand, "Are we just a killing machines?"

"No," Shadow said softly, shaking his head slowly, "The man who devised the whole project, Professor Gerald, wanted something else. He want to make someone who could protect this world, and the people on it."

Shadow looked up from the valley and turned to Ashura, "The true purpose for the Ultimate Lifeform project, the very reason we exist, is to be protectors. We have have been given the chance to protect others, to help those who cannot help themselves."

"It is this reason and this reason alone that you and I are here. Not for whatever the military wants, not to be a weapon but rather a tool for peace."

Shadow looked back at the valley and closed his eyes, "And as we don't age, we are going to be at it for a long time."

Ashura turned to face the valley himself, a small and slow sigh escaping him.

Both of them stood there silently. After a time Shadow opened his eyes slightly and spared a glance at his brother. He hadn't lied, but there were some details best left unknown.

When the first rays of the sun entered the valley both ultimate lifeforms still stood there, leaning on the railing. Each lost in their own thoughts.

This is about 180 years or so after the timeline of the current games.
